Buffalo Wild Wings Visit #1

Having the day off on a Saturday; that's something that happens to me very rarely. Well, a couple of months ago I actually had a Saturday off and decided to head to Buffalo Wild Wings for lunch that day. I went with two "standard" sauces and one from their "Sauce Labs" line. And I was very satisfied with all three!

SWEET BBQ

Flavor Description From the Menu: Traditional BBQ sauce: Satisfyingly Sweet

Sweet BBQ is easily one of my favorite sauces at Buffalo Wild Wings. It has a great combination of BBQ spice and sweetness that leaves you craving more once it's gone.

SAUCE LABS: BOURBON STREET HONEY MUSTARD

I'm always interested in limited time flavors. What can I say? I'm a fan of novelty. So I decided to give this concoction from the Sauce Lab a try. I'm not usually big on honey mustard flavored foods, but this was combined with a bourbon sauce which I enjoy every so often when I order Chinese food. And what a combination it was! The honey, mustard and bourbon flavors all melded perfectly. I'd like to see this one come back as a permanent menu addition.

MILD

Flavor Description From the Menu: Classic wing sauce: High flavor, low heat

I appreciate a good Mild sauce when it comes to wings. I believe they are usually a good barometer for the quality of the sauces available at a restaurant. And the Mild sauce at Buffalo Wild Wings is a damn good one. "High flavor, low heat" is a very good description. In fact, I think it may be the perfect amount of heat for a sauce of this nature. Easily one of my favorites anywhere!

Two Visits To The OffCenter Grill

Recently my family and I have become acquainted with a restaurant called The OffCenter Grill. For those who may not be familiar, this is a casual dining restaurant located at the YorkTowne Hotel in Downtown York. And while a good portion of their menu is more on the upscale side, a couple of the times we went I saw that they were offering wings as an appetizer. So of course I had to give them a try.

BUFFALO

The first time I ordered the wings, I decided to go with traditional Buffalo style sauce. And unfortunately, I was pretty disappointed by them. They were nice sized wings and cooked very well. But they were lightly sauced and, as a result, not very flavorful. The sauce itself, what little of it I found, was actually very bland and didn't have a lot of heat to it like a good Buffalo wing sauce should. But of course I gladly finished them all off. You know me, I'm not one to pass up wings regardless of sauce quality.

BBQ

A week or so later, we found ourselves at The OffCenter Grill once again and I saw wings were once again being offered as an appetizer. I decided to give them another try and this time I went with the BBQ sauce. As you can see by the above picture, there was no shortage of sauce on these wings. And it's a great quality BBQ sauce, perfect combination of sweetness and spice. The next time I see them as an option, I think sticking with BBQ will be the best option.

I definitely recommend giving The OffCenter Grill a look for dinner. More information and the menu can be found at their website here.

Offical Relaunch! Arooga's Visit #1

Well, I'm finally back! So, this iteration of "Wings Of York" is going to be a little different from my first concept. You may recall that my initial plan was to see how many wings I could eat and how many different sauces I could try in the span of a year. Well, that obviously didn't pan out. So this go around I'm going to focus more on quality over quantity. Will I be eating a lot wings? Very likely. Will I try a variety of sauces? You better believe it. But I will do my best not to overdo it. I am trying to manage my weight and diabetes after all.

OK, enough boring preamble. Let's get down to business!

I figured the best way to relaunch the blog was to visit the same place that started this blog in the first place, Arooga's - my favorite local wing place! Monday nights they offer All You Can Eat Wings and I decided to take advantage of this special a couple of weeks ago. Here's what I had.

COAL CRACKER

Flavor Description From the Menu: Creamy hot sauce with cayenne pepper and spices

This has easily become my favorite sauce at Arooga's since I first tried it over a year ago. The flavor and amount of spice in this sauce are both fantastic! Not overpowering in any way at all. I would recommend it to anyone interesting in trying something new in terms of wing sauces.

CHOCOLATE CHIPOTLE BBQ

This sauce didn't have an official description in the menu since it was the sauce of the month for February. I tried it last year when they first offered it because I thought it was an interesting idea for a sauce. So, a year later, I decided to try it again when I saw it was on the menu. This was a very delicious sauce, perfect combination of sweet and spicy. I would love to see it be added to the menu permanently.

SRIRACHA

Flavor Description From the Menu: Spicy, tangy, sweet Thai sauce

Yeah, I'm sure most people have heard of Sriracha and are aware it's one of the most recent flavor trends. I've never really tried the sauce before so I figured this was as good a starting point as any. Honestly, it really didn't do much for me. The tang of the sauce was a little overwhelming to me, and that was what put me off most. I don't mind a tangy flavored sauce, but if it's too tangy it ruins it for me. A rare misfire on this sauce, I don't think I'll revisit it in the future.

That's all for this post signifying the return of Wings Of York. Thank you for coming back and I hope you'll continue to revisit the blog and read about the great wings that we have access to here in York!

TNT Pizza & Wings - Visit #1

All You Can Eat Wings; five words that always bring a smile to my face. And the fact that there are a couple of places in York that offer this deal makes me even happier. And in this installment of Wings of York, I'm going to talk about TNT Pizza & Wings, a local restaurant that offers All You Can Eat Wings on both Tuesday and Saturday nights! I went there for dinner a few weeks ago on a Saturday evening and decided to make a blog entry out of it. Each time you order, they bring you 6 wings of the flavor of your choice. On this visit I went with 3 different servings; Mild Buffalo, Citrus Chipotle and TNT House. I know I usually post pictures of the different wings I order, but the camera on my phone wasn't cooperating. Oh well, so other time. Now, on to the wings!

MILD BUFFALO

Very delicious sauce. Just the right amount of heat and spice, perfect for traditional Buffalo wing fans.

CITRUS CHIPOTLE

I was pretty disappointed with this sauce. It tasted just like a spicy BBQ sauce. No real hints of citrus at all.

TNT HOUSE

A pretty sweet tasting sauce. It's appearance reminded me a little of Italian dressing. I'd definitely try it again, but not after a strong sauce like the Citrus Chipotle.

As far as I'm concerned, you can never go wrong when presented with the option of All You Can Eat Wings. Even though I wasn't thrilled with 1 out of the 3 sauces I chose, it was still a good dinner overall. I'll definitely be back again. Keep an eye out for visit number 2 and consider giving them a visit either Tuesday or Saturday for their All You Can Eat Wing specials! See you next time!

Momo's - Visit #1(?)

Welcome back to another entry for Wings of York. Last week I decided to try a new place for wings, Momo's Pizza and Wings. Momo's is a small franchise in the area that sprang up over the last year or so. And after seeing they had a variety of 32 different sauces to try, I decided to pay them a visit. I went with two 10-piece orders of wings; One with mild sauce and one with Asian Style Orange "Juice". So, let's take a look!

MILD

These were OK. A little too strong on the butter flavor if you ask me though. Really overpowered whatever spice was present in the sauce in the first place. Low marks on this one.

ASIAN STYLE ORANGE "JUICE"

Flavor Description From The Menu: Like Chinese Orange Chicken? You'll love this sauce!

This sauce really disappointed me. I love Orange Chicken! But this sauce was a pretty bland offering. The first couple of wings were very flavorful. But then, the remaining wings seemed flavorless by comparison. I don't know if it was because they weren't evenly coated or what, but this sauce just didn't do it for me.

So, Momo's... I wasn't all that impressed with the place. I might try it again at some point. But I won't necessarily go rushing back. Maybe they'll pizza will impress me more. We'll see, I guess.

Arooga's - Visit #1

Welcome to the first blog post for "Wings Of York",  one man's quest to consume as many different types of chicken wings as possible in one city over the course of a year.

We start with lunch at a restaurant that's been around a little less than a year, but in that time easily became one of my favorite places to go for wings; Arooga's Grille House & Sports Bar! Now there may be some of you reading this blog that would say you've never heard of this place. Well, that's understandable. Arooga's is a franchise restaurant that is based and located in various cities in Central PA. It has a very extensive menu, but is most well-known for it's large variety of wing sauces. And since this is a blog all about wings, that's what we'll focus on.

Friday afternoon I decided to grab lunch at Arooga's and figured this would be a good chance to start this blog off properly. I ordered two 10-piece orders of wings; one with Buffalo Ranch sauce and the other with Coal Cracker sauce. So, let's take a look at them!

(Note: I apologize for the quality of the pictures, the lighting in Arooga's is pretty low. Next time, I might consider turning the flash on.)

BUFFALO RANCH

Flavor Description From the Menu: Our hot sauce with Super Ranch dressing mixed in.

This is easily my favorite flavor at Arooga's. The spices and ranch flavoring meld very well and don't over power one or the other. Plus it frees up some table room since you don't really need to have an extra cup of ranch dressing with you.

COAL CRACKER

Flavor Description From the Menu: Creamy hot sauce with cayenne pepper and spices.

It's kind of hard for me to evaluate this one. Probably because Coal Cracker was so close to Buffalo Ranch on the flavor/heat index chart in the menu. I couldn't really tell much of a difference. Needless to say, I think I'm going to have to revisit this sauce at another time.

This concludes the first entry here at "Wings Of York". I'll be keeping track of all the varieties of wings I've tried as well as the total numbers of wings I've eaten at the bottom of each entry. See below for said lists. Thanks for reading and please come back again for more saucy goodness.

...Yeah, I think I may need to work on a go home line. That was a really lame pun.

Welcome to "Wings Of York"

Hello, and welcome to my new food blog. I figured since they seem to be very popular these days, why not give it a shot? As you may have surmised by the title, this blog will focus on one of my favorite foods; Buffalo wings!

My task, to eat as many different types of wings in the York area between now and my 30th birthday which is September 19, 2013. And believe me, there is no shortage of options around here - Arooga's, TNT, Wings To Go, MoMo's, and a new Buffalo Wild Wings coming soon just to name a few. Also, should I be anywhere else outside of York where wings are an option, they'll be fair game for documentation in this blog also. Any excuse to have some wings is a good one in my book. And this is... well, it's not a book, but I'm sure you get what I'm driving at here.

Ideally the plan is to update at the very least weekly or bi-weekly. There will be pictures of the wings and reviews of the wings themselves as well as the sauces used. Bucking the trend of other food blogs though, I'm not going to use Instagram for uploading the pictures. Because honestly, why bother with unnecessary filters and effects?

If you have suggestions of places to try, I'm entirely open to them. Feel free to post them here or e-mail them to chrismcg1983@gmail.com

Also, you see that "Donate" button at the top of the page? That's the wing fund. If you'd like to contribute to my wing-eating endeavors, feel free to click that button and throw a couple bucks my way.

OK, I guess that'll do it for this introductory post. Thanks for dropping by and I hope you'll follow my chicken-centric conquest for the next year or so. Mmm... wings!
